Michael Schmidt of Canada
became only the second man to win the coveted QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup more than once when he defeated England’s Matt Miller 2 games to 1 in the final of this year’s event in Toulon.  He first won when the event was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2005. Michael went into the finals here as second seed and defeated Engelberto Rivera of the Philippines 2-0 (247 and 252 to 215 and 202) in the first match.  He then came up against top seed Matt and lost the first game 205 to 246.  But he made some shrewd moves, helped by coach Sandy Lowe, and won the second match 212 to 207.     The decider was more one-sided with Michael running out the winner 224 to 188. It was an early present for Michael will be celebrating his 30th birthday this coming Tuesday but he himself said: “Sandy has retired from coaching Team Canada so this is the last time she will be with me on the lanes and I so wanted to win for her. “But it’s also for my parents as well and especially my Dad Rick.  He used to bowl himself but can’t play anymore because of knee problems.  I’m sure his knees hurt after matches like this as he bowls every ball with me.”

The Bent Petersen award for the top country went to England.  High game for the men was 299 by Burak Natal of Turkey while Vanessa Timter of Germany took the ladies’ high game with 286.

The only other man who has won the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup more than once is Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines who has won it an amazing four times (1976, 1980, 1992 and 1996).

Aumi Guerra became the first player from the Dominican Republic ever to win the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup when she triumphed over Min-Young Gye of Korea two games to one.  She qualified in 3rd place but beat the number two seed, Fiona Banks from England, 2-0, with games of 237 to 223 and 246 to 188. Aumi moved on to play Min-Young, the top seed who had led for most of the tournament, and lost the first game 203 to 226. The second game was a nail biter:  left a big split in the 9th frame and it looked to be all over, but amazingly Min-Young split as well in the 10th frame.  Even so Aumi had to get a double to win, which she did and won by 202 to 196. This proved to be crucial and she romped home in the decider by 240 to 196. The ebullient player said afterwards: “This is my favourite tournament in the world. There are so many countries and cultures and you get to know people from everywhere.  I just love it.   “Min-Young is incredible and I didn’t think it possible to beat her but I have learnt how to concentrate and just look to my next shot, and that helped in that second game. I owe a lot to our coach, Craig Woodhouse – we are a team and I take on board everything he tells me.” It was Aumi’s sixth appearance in the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup, and her best result before this was 5th in 2006 in Caracas, Venezuela. Aumi is hoping that her success will help ensure that a training centre is built in the Dominican Republic.  At present there is just one centre in her home town of Santo Domingo.  “We have a lot of potential,” she said, “but we need somewhere to help bring on that potential.” Craig talked of the time he first saw Aumi play: “She had a 150 average and she was awful! But she is totally dedicated, she works really hard and it has paid off. I am so proud of her.”

Wendy Chai of Malaysia heads Min-Young Gye of Korea by eight pins after the first five games of qualifying in the women’s section of the 46th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. The event is being held in Toulon on the French Riviera. Wendy’s total pinfall is 1126 , a 225.2 average, with Min-Young on 1114. In third place is Holly Fleming of Scotland on 1090. "This is my third attempt at this World Cup and I'm determined to do better than the last two," said Wendy who is a member of the Malaysian national squad.  "I used a brand new bowling ball and it worked well.” Holly’s performance was a surprise to many – including herself. “I’m speechless,” she said, “and I’m never speechless!” The women will bowl their second set of five games today (19th) with a further two sets of five to determine the top 24 for Friday’s quarter final.

Engelberto Rivera of the Philippines heads the leader board after the first five games in the 46th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Toulon, France, with a total pinfall of 1181, a 236 average. Ham Chieh Kwan of Switzerland is in second place on 11590 with former champion Mohammed Khalifa Al Qubaisi of the United Arab Emirates a further 14 pins behind. Engelberto, known as Biboy, said afterwards: “I didn’t bowl well in practice and gambled on a different game plan when we started. I bowled a little straighter and that gave me more room for error, plus I got good carry.    “I’m very pleased with the way I played today but there is still a long way to go.” Nicolas Forestier of France is currently in 9th place on 1085 and the high game so far is 289, shot by Alejandro Reyna of Costa Rica.

All the bowlers will play 20 qualifying games before there is a cut to the top 24. At present the cut is a 205 average with Stephen O’Connor of Ireland on the cut line. The overall average for all the men is 192.5. The women’s event gets underway this afternoon (October 18th).

23. September 2010

There is now less than one month before bowlers of the world unite in Toulon, France, from 15-24 October, for the 46th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. Over 90 countries have indicated that they will be sending players and most of them have now nominated their participants. Twenty-four of the players so far nominated also took part last year. Among the latest players to be nominated is our champion of 1988 Mohammed Khalifa Al-Qubaisi of the UAE. Mohammed will be making his 15th appearance in the tournament, closing in on the record 16 appearances by Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines. Among those coming will be four former winners of the Sportsman / Sportswomen of the tournament, an award which is voted for by the players themselves:
Sue Abela of Malta in 1991

Bashar Kalaji of Syria in 2001

Beatrix Pesek of Hungary in 2003

Nasheeha King of Mauritius in 2006

The Bowling World Cup ‘family’ will be well represented again with Marin Tranier and Samy-Anna Saba of New Caledonia  taking part, the married couple who met at the Bowling World Cup in 2002. This year we will also welcome father and daughter Aurelio and Uliana Grosu who will be playing for Moldova. Uliana reached the top 24 last year, but her father will be competing for the first time.  And an old rivalry will be renewed when Israeli player Or Aviram meets up again with Michael Schmidt  - he was runner up to Michael in 2005 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Television coverage will be provided by local TV network Var TV who have already produced an introduction to the Bowling World Cup. Go to http://www.vartv.fr/direct1/ to view the film and to see more of the city and the village where we will all be staying.   Var TV will be working with Eurosport to bring the event to a wider audience.

The refurbished centre was officially reopened on 10th September by Hubert Falco, Mayor of Toulon and Government Minister for Defence with special responsibility for veterans, and Jean-Louis Masson, Mayor of the city of La Garde.  Anne-Marie Board, QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup manager, commented: “We are very grateful  to both M. Falco and M. Masson for all the help they have given us to organise this year’s event.   I hope we will have the honour of welcoming them once the action has started.”

The Bowling World Cup has been held twice before in France. The first occasion was in the early days, in 1967, at the Bowling de Paris, and the event returned in 1992, to Le mans, when the winners were the legendary Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines and Germany’s Martina Beckel.    France has won the title just once when Philippe Dubois won in 1979 in Bangkok, Thailand. The winners last year, when the tournament was held in Melaka, Malaysia, were Choi Yong-Kyu of Korea and Caroline LaGrange of Canada.

Der Qubica AMF Weltcup 2010 wird in Toulon, F, gespielt
QubicaAMF is pleased to announce that the 46th Bowling World Cup will be held in Toulon, on the French Riviera, from 15 to 24 October 2010.  Michel Beltramone, Managing Director of the 44 lane Bowling de Provence, stepped in to host the World Cup after a change in ownership in Croatia prevented the tournament going ahead there as planned.  Commenting on the change in venue, President and CEO of QubicaAMF, John Walker, said:  “It is very regrettable that the economic climate in Croatia and ownership changes at the host bowling center have made it necessary to move the 2010 Bowling World Cup from Zagreb. We had great support for the event from the Croatian Olympic Committee, the local Bowling Federation and other government agencies and I am confident that the World Cup will be held in Croatia in the near future.  “It is a wonderful country which is very rich in sporting history and will one day be a tremendous site for the Bowling World Cup. We are also very lucky to have an alternative like Toulon where Michel Beltramone has offered to host this great event and bring it to France for the third time.”
The Bowling de Provence centre is located at La Garde, a suburb of Toulon. It is part of one of Toulon’s major sports complexes, which also boasts an ice centre (skating, ice hockey and curling), billiards, a swimming pool, gymnasiums and fitness centres.  The centre has been completely refurbished, inside and out, and will re-open in early September. It is a modern, state of the art facility, fully equipped with QubicaAMF equipment.  It has grown down the years, from 6 lanes at the beginning to become a 12, then 16, 20, 24, 28 and with 44 lanes, it is now the biggest bowling centre in France.

Ron Wood, Vice President of QubicaAMF said: “I am certain that the event in Toulon will match the spectacular tournament when we were last in France in 1992, in Le Mans. Michel Beltramone and his team are looking forward to welcoming the bowling world to this historic city. I am also delighted that Hubert Falco, the mayor of Toulon and Minister in the French Government, is giving his personal backing and that of his administration to the event.”

The 1992 event saw Martina Beckel of Germany and Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines crowned champions. French bowlers have been ever present in the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup since the very first tournament in 1965.  But only one French player has ever lifted the trophy – Philippe Dubois in 1979, when the event was held in Thailand.

Toulon lies on the western end of the Cote d’Azur on the Mediterranean, known around the world as the French Riviera. It was settled by the Romans when its claim to fame was production of the purple dye used for imperial robes. It developed into a harbour for trading ships, then a royal port and it is now the major French naval port on the Mediterranean. Its delightful historic centre is a mass of narrow streets, small squares and numerous fountains. It is twinned with six other cities, among them the naval ports of Norfolk, Virginia, USA and Kronstadt, Russia. Official invitations to the 2010 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Toulon will follow.
