The
Finals at the 49th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup
After
40 games, we came down to the finals, the best of three in each match. First up
were Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic and Cherie Tan of Singapore. Aumi
took an early lead but had two splits late in the game and Cherie won the first
game 214 to 208.Aumi never really got going in the second game, shooting 203 to
Cherie’s 246. So
Cherie moved on to meet Caroline Lagrange, our top seeded player. Caroline won
the first game 242 to 207 but the scores
were reversed in the second game, with Cherie hitting 247 to Caroline’s 212. So
we were in for a deciding game and what a game! Nip and tuck all the way and it
came down to the final frame, with Caroline 176 after 8 frames and Cherie 173.,
and each of them sparing the 9th. Caroline up first, knowing three strikes in
the 10th would shut Cherie out. She got strike, 9, miss. So Cherie needed the
first two: she got the first but then left a single pin. Caroline won by 215 to
213. She
said afterwards: “this is probably the best win of my life. It’s unbelievable.
My mother, Louise, is here with me and she was in Melaka as well, but Mark – my
husband – couldn’t make it this time. I
spoke with him immediately afterwards on Facetime, when it was about four in
the morning in Canada. He’s bowling in a tournament himself later on and it was
a short call so he could get back to sleep!” Caroline
is the sixth Canadian woman and the 10th Canadian overall to win the trophy.
On came
the men. Sadly for the host nation, Alexei Parshukov never really got going. He
appeared quite nervous and lost in two games to Or Aviram of Israel, 213 and
220 to 171 and 206. Or took
an early lead but Guy came back. Then a split in the 9th let Or in and he won
the first game by 279 to 245. Guy hit the first six in game two while Or
struggled and by the time Or found his form again, Guy was too far ahead and
won by 277 to 214. Guy simply did not hit form at all in the deciding game
while Or hit the strikes and ran out the champion by 258 to 182. Afterwards,
his coach commented: “This is truly wonderful. When he came second in 2005, I
wondered if he would ever get another chance and here we are. He played so well
and I am so proud of him.”

Round
robin complete: South Africa and Canada go to finals as top seeds at the 49th
QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup
The
‘Fire Ball’ bowling centre in Krasnoyarsk was jumping this morning for the
round robin, especially with the Russian player, Alexei Parshukov, doing so
well. A large crowd gathered behind his lanes and cheered him to the rafters. With
just the position round to go, the top seed place was up for grabs, as was the
third place. Alexei was leading Guy Caminsky of South Africa but only by 41
pins and with 30 bonus for winning, that was close. As it happened, Guy came
through to win by 12 pins meaning that he goes into the stepladder TV show in
top slot. John Szczerbinski of the USA could in theory move up into third, but
it was unlikely. And indeed Or Aviram of Israel remained in third. The
result also means that the USA with two fourth places will win the trophy for
top country.
With
the women, the situation was different. After the seven games, Cherie Tan of
Singapore was such a long way ahead of Danielle McEwan to secure third place
and a spot in the stepladder final, that it was highly unlikely that she would
be caught. And so it proved. And the top two spots were also clear. So we will
see Cherie play Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic, a two-time World Cup
champion, for the right to take on the top seed, Caroline Lagrange of Canada,
champion in 2009. Should
Caroline win she will become the fifth woman to win the trophy three times.
Should Aumi win, she will become the first woman to win three times. And
whatever happens, this will be the best result for South Africa and Russia in
the men’s section.

Sweden’s
Peter Hellstrom remains in the lead in the men’s division on 7787 just 45 pins
ahead of Or Aviram of Israel. Although two more 300 games were
bowled in this morning’s games neither Nino Stenko of Slovenia nor Joel Tan of
Singapore managed to make the top 8. Russia’s Alexei
Parshukova dropped 5 places but still managed to make the cut.

And now
for the top 24 men
It is
now really tight at the top of the men’s leader board in the 49th QubicaAMF
Bowling World Cup in Krasnoyarsk. Peter
Hellström from Sweden, our leader over the first three days, found the going
harder in the final block of six games, hitting 1313, while Belgium’s Mats
Maggi hit 1502 and pulled up into second place, just 31 pins behind Peter.
Russia’s Alexei Parshukov had another fine set and is in third. Apart from
Mats’ 1500+, 13 other players hit over 1400.
Mats also bowled the only 300 by a man today, in the very first game of
the final set. The cut
for the top 24 was made at 5465, an average of 222.71, with William Ching of
Venezuela going through and Sami Lampo from Finland missing out. The overall
average for all the men was 214.46. The top
24 will bowl a further eight games tomorrow to determine the top eight who will
go through to the round robin on Saturday morning. Performing
as well as you can in a major competition is the goal of most, if not all,
athletes and some of our bowlers have done exactly that. Sergey Popov of Tajikistan smashed his
personal best with a six game set of 1457. Kris Rive of Jersey who set her
personal best for six games earlier this week followed it up with a new PB for
one game of 218. Not to be outdone by his sister, Robbie Rive, set his own PB
for 3 games with 705, and for six games with 1249, while Mongolia’s Ulziikhorol
Khalzan also hit her PB for six games with 1141.

More
300s but Sweden still in the lead
The
first men’s squad produced high scoring again but no perfect games. The second
squad made up for that with three. First, Or Aviram had his second perfect game
of the tournament . Then Mykhaylo Kalika of the Ukraine got in on the act. It
was his first 300 in this event but he did also bowl the only men’s perfect
game we saw last year in Wroclaw. Not to be outdone, Chris Sloan of Ireland,
one of increasing number of players to use the two-handed technique, also had
his second 300 of this tournament. All the
time, Sweden’s Peter Hellström just carried on bowling smoothly and
consistently, finishing the day with the high six-game set of 1518. But he was
nearly beaten by Russia’s Alexei Parshukov, who hit 1515 and moved up into
second place overall, while Guy Caminsky of South Africa also had an excellent
day at the office, finishing with a 1509. Guy now lies in 5th place overall. In
total 15 players shot over 1400 for the six games. The average for all 74
players in the men’s section is 214.49, compared with 199.67 at the same stage
last year. Tomorrow
will see the final six games of the qualifying round, and the cut will be made
for the top 24. Currently
in 24th place is Dmitri Chilkine of Belarus on 4117, with Finland’s Sami Lampo
in 25th on 4083.
The 49th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup is witnessing very high scoring on perfect lane conditions and already we have three perfect games. First up, and therefore the winner of the trophy for high game, was Kestutis Gudauskas of Lithuania. Kestutis, who is 28 and comes from the city of Kaunas, thus claims the 42nd men’s 300 in the history of the tournament but he is not the first Lithuanian player to hit the magic number. That honour went to Andrejus Puskariovas in Singapore in 2004. Kestutis also bowled in the World Cup last year in Poland where he finished 65th.
Later in the day, Alex de Vries of the Netherlands hit the second perfect game and that was followed by another perfect score, this time from Derek Lee, a student from Macau. Two of the three perfect games were played on the lanes covered by our live streaming.
In the lead after the first of four sets of six games is Peter Hellström of Sweden on 1543, an average of 257.17. In second is William Ching of Venezuela on 1495 with Benshir Layoso of the Philippines in third on 1479. The men are playing for a place in the top 24 and after just six games the cut is on 1364, a 227 average. The overall average for all the men is 212.64. The tournament is taking place in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk, in Siberia, in the ‘Fire Ball’ centre which is part of the superb Sibiryak hotel and leisure complex. The finals will be held on Saturday.

Evgeniya
Zelenkova will represent Russia in the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup for the
fifth time when she plays in the 49th edition of the event in Krasnoyarsk in
November. Evgeniya first played in 2006 in Caracas, Venezuela, then represented
her country at home when the tournament came to St Petersburg. Her form improved a great deal and when she
next played in 2009 in Melaka, Malaysia, she came 9th just missing out on the round
robin round. And she missed out again by
just a few pins when she came 9th in Johannesburg in 2011. She and the home
crowd will all be hoping for a higher placing this year. She will be joined in
the Russian team by Alexei Parshukov who has played in the tournament twice,
finishing 23rd in 2007 and 39th in 2010. Another player making a welcome return
to the event will be Cherie Tan of Singapore who came 4th in 2011, just missing out on the step ladder TV
finals. Joel Tan will be the Singaporean
male player, competing in the tournament for the first time.

More
names – and some good news for players
More
countries have announced the names of the players who will be representing them
in the 49th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, in November. Or
Aviram will be coming again to represent Israel. Or has played four times
previously with his best result being runner up in Ljubljana in 2005. Or’s
sister and mother have also competed in the event. Israel’s female player will
be Tali Itzhak. The USA will be represented by John Szczbernski, who also
competed in 2010 in Toulon where he finished 5th, and by Danielle McEwan who
played last year in Wroclaw, Poland, coming 4th and picking up the trophy for
ladies high games with a 300, her first ever perfect game. Several
other players will also making a welcome return. Elkhan Feyzullayev of
Azerbaijan competed in 2010 and 2011, while Ghislaine van der Tol payed for the
Netherlands in 2007, finishing 5th. Adam Shrubb will be returning, representing
Gibraltar. Last year Adam came 9th, just missing the cut for the round robin,
in his country’s best ever result. Both Ireland and Finland will be represented
by newcomers to the event: Sarah Flannery and Christopher Sloan for Ireland and
Sami Lampo and Roosa Lunden for Finland.
